Setting up bank accounts in India

As an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) you are not supposed to keep a savings bank account. You can convert your existing bank accounts to NRO accounts and start a new NRE account.

You can find more details about NRE and NRO accounts on the HDFC website.

In short:

  • NRO account
    • For income from India.
    • No tax benefits (TDS of 30% on interest income).
    • Limitation on repatriation (sending money abroad).
  • NRE account
    • For remittances from abroad.
    • Interest from this tax is not taxed.
    • No restriction on repatriation.

At this point in time, most of us won’t have a foreign phone number. It is absolutely okay to have an Indian phone number. I used Airtel and didn’t face any issues receiving the OTPs.

Do you already have an NRO and NRE account? Please answer the following polls.
