Sending money home

Once you start getting salaries, you will want to send money back home: for your loved ones or personal expenses back in India.

Sending money home is very simple once you have a Japanese bank account/debit card. Instead of relying on banks to transfer money back home, we can use third-party services to send money home.

I have used Revolut and Wise.

Revolut

  • Sing up for Revolut (https://www.revolut.com/en-JP/)
  • Get yourself verified. It can take some time to get your free debit card and address verified.
  • You can send money to foreign accounts after verification.
  • Revolut allows you to add money from credit cards, debit cards, and bank transfers.
  • Money added from Japanese credit cards can’t be sent to other accounts, remitted, or withdrawn from ATMs.

I have used Revolut for almost Two years (Yes, I have been using it since its launch in Japan). Transfers are super fast: it took only 10 minutes to receive the money in my SBI bank account.

I also use Revolut for my day-to-day expenses. I charge the Revolut account from my credit card (earning the points) and use my Revolut card everywhere.

Wise

  • Sign up for Wise (https://wise.com/invite/u/krishnarajp2)
  • Get yourself verified. Unlike Revolut, wise’s debit card is not free. It will cost you 1200 yen.
  • You can make one transfer without verification, but you have to get verified for the subsequent transfers.
  • You can add money from debit cards and bank transfers.
  • You have to pay additional fees if you are using debit cards.

As a user, I prefer Revolut, some of the advantages I found are:

  • Free debit card.
  • Ability to add money to your account from debit cards and credit cards without any additional fees.
  • There is no transfer fee and the exchange rate is almost always better than wise. (Note: Revolut charges a small fee on weekends)
  • Their amazing app and ability to keep track of your expenditures
